Possible causes of high bills for consumption of electricity

  • The meter reader has not visited your property, and an estimated reading has been used by the City to work out your bill.
  • The meter is faulty and is over-reading
  • The reading has been estimated because access to the meter has been blocked, or the meter can’t be found, or the dials are obscured.
  • A meter has been replaced because it is faulty, or because you changed over to prepaid electricity, or a “smart” meter was installed by City Power. In each case a final reading of the old meter should have been taken and noted on the technician’s “job card”. If the reading was not taken, or the job card was not available at the time the invoice was generated, the City would have used an estimated reading.
  • The estimate that the City used for the month (or several months) was excessive and out of line with your normal consumption pattern.
  • The meter reader captured the meter’s reading incorrectly. The City’s computer systems should highlight obvious mistakes but it is possible for the clerks to ignore the warnings and tell the system to use the incorrect reading.

In each region there is a Customer Service Centre except for Bryanston where residents can apply for new services, make queries or lodge complaints about electricity.​
